The current coat of arms of the university was designed by Professor G. E. Pearse and edited by Professor W. D. Howie to correct heraldic inaccuracies before being accepted by the State Herald of South Africa in 1972. The design of the coat of arms includes a gilded background in the upper part of the shield to represent the Witwatersrand goldfields – on which the mining industry from which the university originated – and an open book superimposed on a cogwheel, representing knowledge and industry. The silver corrugated bars in the lower part of the shield represent the Vaal and Limpopo rivers, which form the northern and southern boundaries of the Witwatersrand goldfields. Above the shield is the head of a kudu, a typical Witwatersrand antelope and the university`s mascot.

The university`s motto, “Scientia et Labore,” which means “through knowledge and work” in Latin, appears just below the sign. During the 1960s, Wits acquired a limestone cave known for its archaeological material at Sterkfontein.[29] A farm next to Sterkfontein called Swartkrans, rich in archaeological material, was purchased in 1968, and excavation rights were acquired for archaeological and palaeontological purposes at Makapansgat in Limpopo province. [1] On February 25, 2000, the university administration began implementing a policy called “Wits 2001”, whereby work classified as “not part of the core” of the university (such as cleaning and landscaping) was outsourced to external contractors. The university`s departments were also restructured: the university`s nine faculties were reduced to five, the university`s 99 departments were merged into 40 schools, and courses deemed redundant after a massive revision were eliminated. [19] However, Wits management has initiated programmes to mitigate some of the negative effects of Wits 2001. This included implementing early retirements and voluntary severance packages to minimize cutbacks. In addition, many of the children of the employees concerned were studying at Wits at the time and were receiving scholarships under their parents` employment contracts with Wits. The university therefore continued to offer them scholarships until they obtained the diplomas in which they were enrolled, as well as scholarships for the children of the employees concerned who enrolled in 2000. According to Mail & Guardian, in 2001, the university struck a deal with a private developer, iProp, to build a shopping centre, offices, light industry and medium and high-density housing on the property. [78] Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee a place of study. The university has a number of places for first-year students accredited by the Department of Higher Education and Training. The final selection is subject to availability of places, academic results and, where applicable, other admission requirements. The ethnic composition of the university`s student population is as follows:[4] WITS applicants who have completed a bachelor`s degree without law modules must also apply for the three-year LLB.
