Boston-based law firm Nutter has joined SCCLS` pro bono panel in response to the COVID-19 eviction crisis in Massachusetts. As part of the COVID Eviction Legal Help Project, Nutter has donated hundreds of hours of pro bono legal representation to this project and continues to work with SCCLS clients to keep families in their homes. SCCLS supports its work with state and federal funds, private foundations, and individual and corporate donors. Our largest funder is the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC), which provides approximately 60% of the funds to the organization. Other major donors include the Federal Legal Services Corporation, the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance, the Massachusetts Service Alliance, the Massachusetts Bar Foundation, the MA Department of Public Health, four regional agencies on aging, the United Way, CDBG funds from the cities of Attleboro, New Bedford and Taunton, and private foundations. With funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service (AmeriCorps), SCCLS and the Justice Center also run a national AmeriCorps program that places 36 college or law graduates in legal aid programs across the Commonwealth to support legal aid for low-income families and elderly residents. Our lawyers not only provide high-quality legal assistance to eligible clients in high-priority civil cases, but also offer educational programs for the community and participate in national efforts to gain access to justice through services in organized working groups on content and service issues. When our lawyers see a significant number of clients approaching us with a legal problem arising from private or government illegal conduct that affects them together, they get to the root of the problem and try to solve it for everyone. Each year, the organization provides legal assistance to approximately 5,000 low-income individuals and families in southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod and the islands. SCCLS and its predecessor organizations (Legal Services for Cape, Plymouth & Islands, New Center for Legal Advocacy, and Southeastern Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation) have been providing free, high-quality legal assistance to the community for over 50 years.
