Ai and Autonomous Shipping Developing the International Legal Framework

This collection of tests critically assesses the legal framework necessary for the use of autonomous ships in international waters. The work is divided into three parts: Part 1 assesses the extent to which national maritime transport regulations and the underlying context of international law may need to be modified and updated to take into account the use of autonomous ships on international voyages. Part 2 deals with private law and insurance law issues such as conflicts of laws and pollution liability, rescue, limitation of liability and the allocation of risk between the interests of the carrier and the cargo. Part 3 analyses international conventions dealing with maritime safety and other issues, and advocates specific changes to existing conventions such as SOLAS and MARPOL that would provide the necessary international framework for the commercial use of autonomous ships. The book also argues that the modification of international conventions is important in the case of liability issues, arguing that compliance with these issues could not only limit or impede the availability of liability insurance under national law, in particular product liability issues, but could also hinder the development of technology in this area. Written by internationally renowned experts in their respective fields, the book offers a holistic approach to the debate on autonomous ships and makes a contemporary and important contribution to the literature.
